Some Keys to Hump Fishing

As the water warms, the humps start to turn on and every year I try to teach my customers some ways to be effective fishing the humps. The first trick is to find them, easily accomplished, put your GPS map on your computer, they will show up on a big screen very easy. Mark them and load them on your GPS.

Next, find the humps with grass on the first drops off the humps. That first 3 to 6 foot of drop if it has grass on it you can bet the bass will be on or near that hump somewhere, look for bait fish they are sometimes a big key to hump fishing. Work the hump with different types of baits and different presentations. Try something like spinner baits pulling from the top of the hump to the deeper water. Change the presentation; drop it stop it and slowly retrieve it over the hump.

Change to a slower pace presentation, like a big worm or lizard or comida dropping it and swimming it as you retrieve it back to the boat. Work it slow then work it faster. Try to get a feel for the speed the bass want as you fish the hump. Sometimes in early summer speed of the bait can really mean the difference in catching fish. I have found that some days they want it just sitting on the bottom and others they want a fairly quick swim type retrieve.

Lastly change boat position, the subtle difference of where the boat is can be the biggest factor. The boat needs to be positioned in several different ways, work it out off the 8 to 10 foot water throwing up the hump. Then position it on the corners, as they have a tendency to form points around the humps; and if that doesn’t work position the boat on top of the hump and throw to the deep pulling up the hump. One these will work and put fish in the boat, you just have to try different positions to find the way the bass are positioned.

These keys can make you a very effective fisherman around humps!
