Campbell and Lain win first annual KMEM 100.5 bass tournament on Show Me Lake

17-Feb-07

MEMPHIS, Mo. – Aspiring pro angler Scott Campbell of Kirksville, Mo. and local gun Tony Lain, also of Kirksville, bested the 31-boat field by amassing a five-bass limit of Show Me Lake largemouth weighing in at 12.32 pounds to capture the first place title in the first annual buddy bass tournament put on by the Tri States Real Country, KMEM 100.5 FM on Saturday, May 21st.

The win earned the two anglers an impressive $750 in cash for their efforts.  Campbell and Lain reported that the key to their success seemed to be slowing down their presentations, and switching from the usual heavy baitcasting equipment to lighter, more subtle spinning outfits.  They used soft action rods, and their reels were spooled with fluorocarbon line as small as eight pound test.

What really sealed the deal for these two was what they tied to the end of their lines.  Based upon the heavy tournament pressure that Show Me had received in past weeks, along with the large number of boats participating in the day’s tournament, they elected to throw Gary Yamamoto’s Senkos, an unimpressive-looking soft-plastic bait resembling a cigar, without appendages or other decoration.

Tied weightless onto a red 3/0 Gamakatsu extra wide gap hook, this do-nothing presentation proved deadly on the highly-pressured Show Me bass – Campbell and Lain reported catching 8 keepers throughout the day, with a limit in the boat by 8:00am.

Scott Campbell is a recent graduate of Truman State University in Kirksville, currently pursuing a career in professional bass fishing.  He is a competitor in the Ozark BFL division of FLW Outdoors, as well as the Missouri division of the BASS Weekend Series.  He’d love to hear from you – give him a call at 660-641-3973.

Tony Lain is a well-known local tournament angler who is no stranger to in-the-money finishes.  In fact, this tournament counts as his third win in a row on Show Me Lake, all accomplished with a spinning rod in his hands.  He works at Patty’s University Bookstore in Kirksville.
